Abstract

This article presents an ongoing project which studies the motivational orientations at the end of primary school (after 6 years of schooling) and the first year of secondary school. The two groups differ in terms of the order of acquisition relating to French and English as the L2 and the L3. The results of the longitudinal study (n = 314) show a much more favourable motivation pattern for English than for French at the end of primary school. At the transition from primary to secondary school, the intrinsic motivation of both languages decreases, especially in French. The reversal of language order has no significant effect on the motivation to learn French.
